The article is devoted to the influence of ancient culture on Russian political thought. The main attention is focused on the analysis of the political and philosophical views of the Roman poet Virgil and on the perception of his ideas by V.S. Solovyov. Along with general moral and ethical themes, Virgil's poetry touches on a number of topics in the field of cosmogony, the laws of history, as well as the fate and duty of man. It was the universality of Aeneas, the hero of Virgil’s poem, that attracted Solovyov. He believes that Aeneas, along with Abraham, played one of the most important roles in the formation of the Christian faith and European Christian civilization. The article attempts to identify the degree of influence exerted by the Roman poet Virgil and his epic “Aeneid” on Solovyov’s political, philosophical and religious ideas.
