Department of Byzantine Philosophy
Department of Byzantine Philosophy is working in the areas of patristic studies, the history of Christianity, and Byzantine philosophy and culture. Scholars of the department are successfully working in these areas for a long time. Grigory Benevich and Dimitry Birjukov are of the few in Russia today who in the recent years have been reviving patristic studies and breaking grounds for a new area of research, namely, Byzantine philosophy. They are the authors of a number of fundamental studies in this area, dealing, above all, with the Cappadocian Fathers, Maximus the Confessor and Gregory Palamas. Recently, a two-volume “Anthology of the Eastern Christian Theological Thought” has been published, in which, for the first time in the history of Russia, the texts and the studies of both the Church Fathers and their opponents were gathered together in one edition. The idea of this project belongs to Grigory Benevich; together with Dimitry Birjukov he, also, is the editor and one of the major authors of this publication, which builds upon the most recent scholarly achievements in the field. This study is considerably expanding our vision of the thought and spiritual culture of Byzantium.

Our recent publications: The Anthology of the Eastern Christian Theological Thought (Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy) in two volumes. The Anthology includes texts of more than fifty different Eastern Christian authors from the second to the fifteen centuries, as well as studies on these authors. The aim of the anthology is to show a variety of trends in Eastern (mainly Greek) Christian thought and to represent, as much as possible in a comparatively small anthology, a productive, though often "politically incorrect" dialogue between “Orthodox” and “heterodox” Eastern Christian theologians.
