Academic research on the history of russian philosophy in the USSR in the post-war period: between science and politics (article one)

Annotation

Using archival sources, this article examines the organization, planning, and theoretical content of research on the history of Russian philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the post-war period (1945–1951). It reconstructs the sociohistorical context and political and ideological factors that influenced the development of research and the placement of personnel in the field (patriotic mobilization of society, the campaign against cosmopolitanism, the Leningrad affair of 1949–1952). It shows the nature of interaction between scientists and government officials, as well as the level of attention to historical and philosophical research on the part of the country’s highest political leadership. The component of Russian philosophy in collective research projects, plans for author monographs, publications in scientific periodicals, and the publication of intellectual monuments is revealed. Public debates about the place and significance of Russian philosophy in the culture of the peoples of the USSR, Eastern Europe, and globally are covered. Scientific and methodological discussions on the study of Russian philosophy (subject matter, source studies, chronology, periodization, ideological spectrum) are analyzed. The transformation of the scientific division on the history of Russian philosophy within the staff structure of the Institute of Philosophy is traced.
