Alexander Zinoviev's novel "The Radiant Future" in the assessments of the German-language press (1979–1980)

Annotation

he article is devoted to the review of critical responses of the German-speaking press to the first German edition of A. Zinoviev's novel "The Radiant Future", which became an intellectual event in Germany, Switzerland and Austria in 1979-1980. The article gives the history of the publication of the novel and its reception in the German-language press, presents a range of opinions evaluating the aesthetic and substantive novelty of the novel, and highlights the most relevant topics and problems for critics. The novel "The Radiant Future" became fateful for A. Zinoviev, it was its publication in the West that caused the writer's expulsion from the USSR in 1978. The event was widely covered by the German-language press. The writer settled in Munich, becoming one of the important media figures. The first publication of the novel "The Radiant Future" in German gave readers of Germany, Switzerland and Austria the opportunity to assess for themselves the scale and significance of A. Zinoviev's literary activity, and therefore special attention was focused on it.
