Annotation

The object of the study is the phenomenon of the influence of Japanese art on the painting of Paul Gauguin. In his works, the artist used fragments from Japanese engravings, adopted original compositional solutions and a planar manner of depiction, but behind this outer side of his search was the desire of the master to enrich the semantic field of the picture, filling it with various allegorical images and signs. Based on the consideration of the painter's paintings and the analysis of his written sources, it is concluded that the influence of Japanese art contributed to the formation of Gauguin as a symbolist artist and the development of his own creative method.

Keywords
