A problem of cultural decline in the philosophical and cultural concept of D. S. Merezhkovsky

Annotation

This article scrutinizes a problem of cultural decline in the philosophical and cultural concept of D. Merezhkovsky. Merezhkovsky was seriously worried about contemporary culture at the turn of 20th century. According to philosopher, impetuous cultural decline is caused by the technogenic temper of contemporary civilization, by the positivism, that catching human minds and by the loss of religiosity. He called an idea of “endless progress” the worst of potential infinities. Ubiquitous spread of this idea is caused by separation of scientific knowledge from faith. Lack of religious feelings in society leads to lack of moral imperatives and temper dissoluteness, as Merezhkovsky thought. However, forthcoming ruination of contemporary technogenic civilization means beginning of new stage in human cultural history, not the final condemnation.
