Annotation
Based on the analysis of the works of Polish historians, poets and prose writers, an attempt is made to define the attitude towards the personality and rule of Ivan the Terrible in Polish society in the era that followed the divisions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and lasted until Poland gained independence in 1918. A representative sample of both popular science and fiction shows that the views of the Polish scientific and creative intelligentsia on this problem were not unambiguous, and the idea of autocracy, tyranny and absolutism found its supporters in society with the traditions of «gentry democracy».
