Annotation

The article covers a topic of the development of the concept of androgyne in Gnostic and medieval philosophy. The changes that have occurred to it are described, connected with the interpenetration of the myth of Plato and the biblical history of the Fall. In Plato’s myth, the reason for the split of the androgyne was the punishment by Zeus for pride. In Gnosticism, the process of separating is associated with the falling away of the soul and its forgetting of its true nature, which illuminates the internal cause. In medieval philosophy, the way of rebuilding unity becomes a measure of a person’s responsibility for his Salutis, because the reason for the split is in human, in his Fall, although it also reflects a disposition of Providence. The Platonic and Gnostic understanding of the androgyne is characterized by indivisibility, while medieval philosophy understood it as a dynamic unity in which opposites complement each other, gaining completeness in the wholeness.

Keywords
