Annotation

The paper is devoted to the study of the islanders’ culture of Oceania, which is taken from the position of the ontological turn. Drawing on historical and ethnographic data (XVIII–XIX centuries), as well as relying on the modern anthropological ideas, we propose to outline the framework within which one can talk about a native ontology and to be able to analyze it. As a distinctive characteristic of the native ontology we see the concept of «spirits» or «forces», which inhabit the important things and places. They are associated with the cult of ancestors and funeral rites. We strive to answer the question: what it means «to be dead» in the native imago mundi? The hypothesis states that the native people do not presume the ontological gap between the living and the dead, so both of them coexist like different neighborhoods in the same landscape. This paper is a mere approach to a more detailed reconstruction of this specific ontology.

Keywords
