Annotation
The cycle of the author’s works devoted to the adaptive potential of works of art for societies going through cataclysms, mainly severe pandemics, is opened with the article. The subject of this article is the existential, social and psychological impacts of visual works that arose as the response to or in premonition of the plague in the XIV–XVI centuries on its witnesses. Through the analysis of the iconography of the dances of death, typical images of Saint Sebastian and Roch, created in the indicated period in response to the experienced or possible plague disaster, the author researches its productive significance for the witnesses of the epidemic, found in ordering of being-in-the-world, affirming of present’s open structure and restoring connection with the other, which are lost with the active spread of the deadly disease. The actualization of these existential structures is necessary to restore social connections that are being destroyed under the pressure of the disastrous epidemic.
