«Isonomy» and «Indifference»: about A. N. Egunov’s translation of the description of a «Democratic man» in the VIII book of Plato’s «Republic»

Annotation
The article is devoted to the specifics of A. N. Egunov’s translation of the political term «ἰσονομία» in the VIII book of the Republic (561e). Contrary to the direct meaning of this term, denoting equality (which was considered one of the necessary attributes of democracy), Egunov understands it as indifference. We believe that the reason for this is not a mistake or «author’s blindness». Egunov’s translation allows us to see the psychological subtext of the nature of a democratic person (as interpreted by Plato). Deep indifference in this place is the main characteristic of a decentralized democratic individual. This human trait will be one of the reasons for the transition from democracy to tyranny.
