Сharacteristics of the “Hundred-day” anti-religious campaign of 1954: regional aspect

Annotation

This article will analyze the features of the “hundred-day” anti-religious campaign of 1954. The partial weakening of Stalin’s repressive policy against religious organizations in the post-war period was replaced by a new round of ideological struggle against religion, known in historiography as “Khrushchev’s anti-religious campaign”. The article analyzes the initial stage of “Khrushchev’s persecution” of the Russian Orthodox Church, dated to the short time period summer — autumn 1954. Propaganda and administrative strategies, tested during the anti-church events of 1954, were embodied at the time of the deployment of a full-scale anti-religious campaign of 1958–1964. The article analyzes the factors and causes that caused a sharp change in religious policy in the post-Stalin period, notes the nature and content, results and consequences of the “Khrushchev” anti-church campaign. For a long time, legal regulation of the position of religious associations was considered an effective means of restricting the activities of religious organizations on the territory of the USSR. On the basis of the instructions and resolutions of the party bodies, “rough administration” and bureaucratic control over the activities of Orthodox dioceses and local parishes were carried out, although the anti-religious campaign of 1954 was declared as a purely propaganda and scientific and educational event. On the basis of documentary materials from the State Archives of the Tver Region, introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, the course of the implementation of the anti-religious campaign of 1954 is described. in the regions, on the example of the Kalinin region.
