Pages of the Russian «Augustiniana»: E. N. Trubetskoy and I. V. Popov
Annotation
The article examines two methods to the study of the personality of St. Augustine in the master's thesis of the philosopher and jurist E. N. Trubetskoy “Worldview of St. Augustine” (1892) and in the doctoral's thesis of professor of the Moscow theological academy I. V. Popov “The personality and legacy of St. Augustine” (1916). The article notes that both authors linked the uniqueness of the views of the Bishop of Hippo with his original religious and philosophical worldview, but if Trubetskoy writes about the social conditionality of Augustine's worldview, then Popov focuses on the internal psychological features of the personality of a Christian thinker. Special attention is paid to places from Augustine's biography on which both domestic researchers disagreed. The author submits that Popov's book on Augustine, despite its undoubted significance for the history of Russian patristics, remains virtually devoid of a separate detailed study.
