Panpsychism: to the origins of concept formation

Annotation

The article offers a panpsychic interpretation of some ancient Greek and ancient Indian teachings. The relevance of addressing the origins of panpsychism is due to the popularity of this concept among modern approaches to the problem of consciousness-body and scientific theories of phenomenal consciousness. The author examines ancient notions of soul and mind in the teachings of the Presocratics, Plato, Aristotle, as well as the Upanishad and Sankhya Yoga philosophy. The results of the study show that the concept of panpsychism in its early versions of hylozoism, cosmopsychism, hylemorphism, emergentism and physicalism was one of the influential ontological approaches within the first philosophical teachings. At the same time, a distinctive feature of early Indian thought is the formulation of an alternative variety of consciousness-mind dualism.
