The phenomenon of forgiveness: a modern philosophical and anthropological perspective

Annotation

The phenomenon of forgiveness has become the subject of interdisciplinary research in recent decades at the intersection of philosophy, psychology and theology. In Christian theology, forgiveness is a fundamental concept that embodies the essence of God’s love and mercy for humanity and points to the pinnacle of Christian morality. The shift of scientific accents in modern theological research from ontological and theological perspectives to anthropological vectors as a result of the “anthropological turn” of the turn of the XIX–XX centuries gives additional relevance to the discourse of interpersonal forgiveness. The specificity of the relationship of “forgiveness and unforgiveness” in Christian theology lies in the fact that the “horizontal” aspects of resentment, guilt, retribution and forgiveness proper are closely related to the “vertical” (human relationship with God). The latter, in turn, determine both the motivations for forgiving others and the availability of resources for forgiveness. Philosophical and anthropological interpretations emphasize the position of the subject in the world, its correlation with the ideals of morality and the actions of other subjects
