Doctrine of the name of hieroschimonk Anthony (Bulatovich) in the context of “onomatodoxic” polemics

Annotation

The article is focused on one of the most important aspects of the “onomatodoxic disputes”, which from the very beginning acquired mainly theological and to a lesser extent practical and canonical nature. The dispute involved not only monks, clerics and the hierarchy of the Church, but also Russian religious philosophers. However, in this article we consider only the views and arguments of the former on the example of the writings of Hieroschimonk Anthony (Bulatovich). The article shows that the problems of Bulatovich’s theological reasoning originate from his misunderstanding of the essence of the dispute between iconoclasts and iconodules. We present and analyze the main accusations by the “onomatodoxes” against the “onomatoclasts”, particularly in Arianism and antipalamism. On the basis of patristic texts the untenability of such accusations and the inconsistency of the doctrine of the name of Hieroschimonk Antony (Bulatovich) with the teachings of the Church are proved.
