Creation, interpretation, subordination as types of interrelation betweeen neopaganism and art
Annotation
The paper presents a description of the type and nature of connections between art and “new religiosity”, as well as their respective forms of objectification, as exemplified by Russian neo-paganism and modern Russian artistic culture. I demonstrate that art and new religiosity are self-sustained culture forms today that nonetheless display mutual borrowings of form, content and method. The shaping of a worldview in modern religious movements, in particular neo-paganism, constitutes itself along the lines of specifically artistic structuring of the world; due to this fact, their followers have a chance to alleviate existential conflicts and lift existential borders, and possibly attain at last a unity of man and universe. I describe the three types of relations between art and neo-paganism in today’s Russian culture such as: creation, interpretation, subordination. I prove that what defines them is: a) the institutional dominant (in terms of which plane prevails: the artistic of the religious one), b) the degree to which actors are immersed in the specific system of religious ideas, and c) other types of their specialism. An explanation is also provided of other features of neo-paganism in its interaction with art, in particular why the same trend of new religiosity can demonstrate different attitudes towards art.
